Cheap Homemade Firestarter Kit

You can also put a small piece of sandpaper in there instead of the striker strip from the side of the matchbox. You know, in case you’re making a bunch of these and run out of strikers.
Posted by aporitic on 11/21 at 12:45 PM [link]Might want to pack some of these in ther too
Posted by Dave on 11/21 at 08:31 PM [link]Every time I look at these sort of things I end up packing several Bic lighters in a ziploc bag instead. They’re cheap, compact and reliable.
Posted by BryanP on 11/24 at 08:12 AM [link]BryanP,
I also have a few dozen lighters spread around in various bugout bags, as well as one of those big pistol-grip barbecue lighters. They’re excellent firestarters to have on hand. FWIW, the advantage of this little kit is that is has fire and tinder in the same container.
Posted by Greg on 11/24 at 10:03 AM [link]Ingredients:
Dryer lint (I hear that an alternative is corrugated cardboard, but I have not tried that).
Petroleum jelly.
Cat-food or tuna can.
Strike-anywhere matches.
Small zip-lock bag or aluminum foil.
Melt petroleum-jelly in a microwave and pour over dryer lint. Cut/tear into strips the width of the cat food can (~2”) and coil into cat food can, on top of bagged/wrapped matches. Result is a waterproof “stove” that will burn for hours.
This works great with the Boy-Scouts.

Posted by 4F on 01/25 at 02:11 PM [link]I got those Firestart logs from Wal-Mart in my bags, too. I believe there are a few different brand-names that you may find in sporting-goods stores and such.(I’ve seen them in grocery stores here in southern OH, too) They are usually sawdust compressed with wax, and you can light them with a match or butane lighter. Cut off an end into a tin-can stove, and they’ll work about as well as Sterno or Trioxane, and much cheaper. Plus, they’ll light even after you immerse them in water, because of the wax content. They’re nearly smokeless, and they’re made to start stovewood—- if you do decide to start a wood fire, use kindling and small twigs to get it going first, and you’ll be able to start dozens of fires from a single one.
The ones I have contain some sort of petroleum distillate too, so I wouldn’t roast weenies or marshmallows over the open flames…use a small chunk to start a larger wood fire, and wait til it burns off the petrol nastiness. Also, they have a slight chemical odor, so I keep them in a Ziploc bag, along with a lighter.Posted by B Smith on 02/04 at 11:07 PM [link]I am not really sure if best practices have emerged around things like that, but I am sure that your great job is clearly identified. I was wondering if you offer any subscription to your RSS feeds as I would be very interested and can’t find any link to subscribe here bikinis

Posted by Filtered Water Vancouver on 06/11 at 10:01 AM [link]I think its a good idea, to use tapered wood to make a “fire box”. it’s not illegal to burn shims nor is there toxic chemicals in them, you twit. Also it is not illegal to burn hot glue, they sell fireworks and they produce more toxic fumes then melted glue. I wouldn’t recommend it because of the smell and fumes. It might be illegal to burn on “non-burn” days but that’s it. the wax will produce fumes as well, just not as black.
Posted by Fat loss 4 idiots on 06/29 at 08:01 PM [link]Take 35-40 wooden strike-anywhere matches and stand them up in the bottom of the container. On top of that, put two cotton balls or a wad of dryer lint. Optionally, cut off a piece of the striker strip from the side of the matchbox and store it in the tube as well.

Acai Berry SupplementPosted by Carl on 08/23 at 11:36 AM [link]Materials for this homemade water filter by Mac will cost you about $3. This water filter is lightweight and compact. It will filter out organic impurities, but it will not make the water totally safe to drink. Boil or chemically treat the water before drinking. Shaking the water after it has been boiled or chemically treated will oxygenate the water and improve the taste.Online universities

Lose weightPosted by Abbu on 09/27 at 11:14 AM [link]Do not feed your dog bones, especially cooked bones. Fragments can become lodged in the digestive tract. Canines in the wild who eat bones have the benefit of consuming hair and hide too, which have been found to ‘pad’ the bone fragments and aid in their passing. Other foods to avoid that are dangerous for dogs are chocolate, avocados, mushrooms, macadamia nuts, grapes, raisins, onions, and garlic.natural best dog food
